ACCESSIBLE WEBSITES FROM 2025: OBLIGATIONS & OPPORTUNITIES

Starting from 28th June 2025, the Accessibility Act (BFSG) will come into effect. Companies that fail to make their websites accessible risk warnings, fines, and exclusion from public contracts. However, accessibility is more than just a legal obligation – it enhances the user experience for everyone and brings tangible benefits:

Increased Reach – Reach all users without limitations.
Better Ranking – Accessible websites perform better in search engines.
Optimal Usability – Improve user-friendliness and conversion rates.

WHAT DOES THE BFSG MEAN FOR COMPANIES?

The Accessibility Act (BFSG) implements the EU Directive 2016/2102 and requires companies to make their digital offerings accessible to everyone. The goal is to ensure unrestricted access to online services for all individuals.

The law applies to both public and private companies, especially in sectors such as:

E-Commerce – Online shops must ensure that all users can shop.
Financial services – Online banking and insurance portals must be accessible.
Healthcare sector – Websites for doctors and clinics must be accessible to everyone.
Public transport – Timetables and ticket bookings must be accessible.

EXEMPTIONS

Small companies with fewer than ten employees and an annual turnover or balance sheet total of no more than 2 million euros are exempt from the requirements, unless they place products on the market.

WHAT REQUIREMENTS APPLY TO WEBSITES?

The technical requirements are based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, which establish four principles:

Perceivability – Content must be accessible to all (e.g., via alternative text for images).
Operability – Websites must be navigable without a mouse and with screen readers.
Understandability – Clear structures and simple language enhance usability.
Robustness – Compatibility with assistive technologies must be ensured.

WHY ACCESSIBLE DESIGN IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE

Accessibility not only improves the experience for people with disabilities but also makes websites more accessible to everyone – including older individuals, mobile users, and those with temporary impairments (e.g., following an injury).
